Chapter 2

I walked into me and my sister Courtney's room. The black funeral dress I wore hung to the ground, and dragged with my feet. Courtney had left right after the Funeral and was now in bed with silent tears streaming down her face. I hadn't cried. the realization just hadn't hit me yet. no matter how many times i told myself "mom's gone. she's not coming back" I just couldn't believe it.
" are you ok" said Courtney as she looked at me.
"yeah. i'm fine." I said quietly. the look on her face told me she knew I was lying, but she just nodded and closed her eyes. it was dark but I wasn't tired. I went out onto my balcony and down the stairs to my personal garden. most balcony's didn't have stairs but ours did. because we were royalty and we don't deserve to walk all the way down the castle stairs to get outside. that's what mother always said. I sat down on a bench near a fountain surrounded by roses and started to sob. I sat there and cried for what seemed like days, until I felt someone watching me. I looked up to see one of our many servants holding a plate of fresh foods.
"evening princess" he said, "the king asked me to deliver this plate of food to you for you have not eaten" he said it as if he were sorry for me, and had a sympathetic look. I've seen him before, he's one of our younger servants about as old as me.
"i'm not really hungry" I wiped the tears from my eyes and looked at him. he was looking at the ground and slowly lifted his head up.
"I know what its like. both of my parents died when i was 8. A nice women took me in to work here, but she died 2 years ago." his eyes watered slightly and he wiped them. then he smiled at me.
"it'll be alright" he said it with so much confidence that I believed him. this was very strange. The servants never treated me like an actually human being. it was always "would you like this princess" or "would you like that princess". I liked it being able to talk to someone other than my sister, and to have them understand me.
"would you like to sit down." I patted the spot next to me.
"is that an order princess?" he said teasingly, but not to much. just enough to make me laugh. and it did. I couldn't remember the last time I actually laughed because I wanted to. He laughed with me and sat down.
"now what can I call you other than 'Princess'" he asked. I realized I haven't actually given him my name.
"Gwendo-Gwen. you can call me Gwen. and what may I call you" I decided to just give him the nickname I imagined my friends would call me if I had any.
"Trent. lovely meeting your acquaintance Gwen." He smiled at me. he was very handsome, much more than some princes iv'e met. long black hair. light green eyes. my thoughts were interrupted by a light at the end of the garden.
"um, Trent it was lovely meeting you but I think you better go." I said quietly. My father didn't like me talking to servants any more than I had to. I'm sure he wouldn't be pleased to find me with Trent. he looked behind me and immediately understood.
"well i'll see you around, Gwen." he smiled at me then ran off.
"bye" i said silently to the slowly fading figure.
"Gwendole, what are doing out here. it's nearly midnight and I don't want you out here with those criminals still on the loose." My dad said advancing toward me with a candle lantern. right the bandits were still out. the ones that killed my mom.I wiped my eyes that were starting to water. like Trent said it would be alright. I headed back to me and Courtney's room where she looked fast asleep, but as soon as Father left she shot awake.
"what were you thinking" she said in a yell-whisper, "you know how dad feels about the servants don't let him find you talking to one like your best friends." I couldn't lie there was no point.
"we were just talking ok there's nothing wrong with that." I tried to cover myself up but it wasn't working."
"try telling dad that. listen I'm not gonna tell him but if he finds you with that boy he's gonna freak." I knew she was just worried about me. every time she was worried her words would mush together and you had to work to separate them.
"Listen Courtney we just talked for a little bit and dad didn't find us no harm done." i tried to smile at her but it wasn't very convincing.
"not yet" Courtney said and turned off the light.
